Chapter Sixteen

Fawn washed her face and scoffed at her reflection. How could she cry over a few seconds of being felt up and talked down to? It was par for the course, after all. She was trained to endure that kind of treatment and worse.

She had gone through a lot of trouble forming an impenetrable armor around her pride so that it could never bruise. To her dismay, her understanding of what she was and where she stood in the world was beginning to change. She hadn’t even noticed until reality came knocking.

Feeling the tether’s cold tug and spiky ebbing in her core, she found her way down the stairs to the parlor room. Anreya stood behind the bar, likely resisting the urge to throw the glass splintering under her firm grip.

“Anreya?”

Fawn moved behind the alpha and wrapped her arms around her waist, leaning against her back.

“Did something bad happen?”

“You tell me. You were upset earlier.”

“I wasn’t."

Anreya poured herself another drink in a non-cracked glass and took a sip.

“You’re a terrible liar.”

She huffed in amusement. “So are you.”

“How did she upset you? What did she do?”

The mage blinked back the tears stinging her eyes, drudging up rhetoric she was taught in training.

“Any associate of my keeper—"

“Fawn.” Anreya turned around and drew her gaze up with the tilt of her chin. “That wasn’t the question.”

She grinned wide to keep from frowning as tears pricked her eyes. Telling her how Gwen treated her would only anger her more and it wouldn’t change anything about her reality.

“Well, that’s my answer.”

Anreya didn’t look satisfied, but what mattered most to Fawn were the tangled emotions pulling in all directions inside of her.

“Now, about what’s bothering you—”

“It’s nothing.”

“Lie. Try again.”

After a pause, Anreya sighed. “My mother’s eldest sister is dying. I’ve been invited to pay respects before her end.”

“You don’t get along?”

“She and her brothers hate my father for killing their sister. When they look at me, they see the evil tyrant Alfana Vyron. It doesn’t seem to matter to them that I am the daughter of a Mevelia, too.”

“But you didn’t do anything.”

“Exactly. It’s my inaction they despise.”

“But Anreya, you were just a kid—”

“I’m an alpha. That made me old enough to kill him. I was dragon enough to challenge him and win. At the final rest, they demanded to know why I didn’t step up sooner and I couldn’t answer them. They believe me to be a product of my father’s barbaric teachings. In their eyes, I am the tainted legacy of Kostan Vyron whether I like it or not. I don’t know if I can face their disappointment and disdain again.”

Fawn took her hand in hers and traced Anreya’s palm with her fingertips. A violet glow seeped into her irises.

“If they’re including you, it could mean they’re ready to understand you.”

She had a flurry of fuzzy visions, a string of possible outcomes and the emotions attached. There was aggression, pain, sorrow, but also relief and gratitude, wholeness. The latter outweighed the former because Anreya’s heart sought it most.
